‘If she calls herself Mummy Jayden, why do you care?’ —Maraji tackles critics of women who make motherhood their identity

Nigerian skit maker and content creator Maraji has challenged critics who question women who make motherhood and marriage a prominent part of their identity.

In a recent discussion, Maraji questioned why women should be concerned about whether men adopt similar labels or behaviours, arguing that women should be free to celebrate what they personally value.

“If she calls herself Mummy Jayden, why do you care?” she asked.

Maraji said being married or having children should not prevent a woman from choosing to identify herself as “Mommy,” “Mrs.” or by other labels that reflect her family status.

She criticised the tendency to compare women’s choices with what men do, arguing that women do not need to seek male validation before embracing things they find meaningful.

“I don’t give a damn what a man is doing,” she said, adding that women should be able to make their own choices without constantly measuring them against men.

Maraji also pointed to activities such as skincare, makeup, manicures and fitness, noting that people generally allow individuals to embrace interests that matter to them without questioning whether members of the opposite sex do the same.

She argued that motherhood can be a significant achievement, particularly considering the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth.

According to her, carrying a baby for nine months, dealing with complications such as severe sickness, hypertension or gestational diabetes, and eventually giving birth can be a major experience for a woman.

Maraji therefore questioned why a woman should be criticised for proudly identifying as a mother after going through pregnancy and childbirth.

“In the same breath we are trying to let men see how hard pregnancy is… but when a woman has achieved life, it’s like, why would you want to make it your entire personality?” she said.

She maintained that women should be allowed to celebrate motherhood in whatever way they choose, without feeling pressured to conform to expectations about how they should define themselves.
