Social media commentator Daniel Regha and Delta State Special Assistant on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, have criticised Burna Boy over the outfit he wore while performing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, arguing that he missed an opportunity to showcase Nigeria's cultural heritage on one of the world's biggest stages.
Reacting on X, Ossai Ovie Success said he was proud when Burna Boy was announced as one of the performers but felt disappointed by his choice of outfit.
According to him, the Grammy-winning singer should have worn traditional Nigerian attire such as Aso Oke, Isiagu, Ankara, coral beads or other culturally significant fabrics to promote Nigeria's rich heritage to a global audience.
"When I heard that Burna Boy would be performing at the final of the World Cup, I was genuinely proud.
"He did perform, and he represented Nigeria as an artist. But he failed to represent our cultural heritage.
"By now the world should be talking about Aso Oke, Isiagu, Ankara, beads, coral, and the uniqueness of Nigerian dressing.
"Music made us proud. But the cultural representation was a missed opportunity. We can do better. Our culture deserves that global spotlight. I am disappointed."
Daniel Regha shared a similar opinion, stating that Burna Boy failed to use the moment to showcase his Nigerian and African identity through his fashion.
"Burna couldn't even use the opportunity to showcase his Nigerian-African heritage by styling in a proper fabric-inspired outfit. Fela would've represented."
Their comments have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that Burna Boy should have embraced traditional Nigerian fashion on such a global platform, while others argued that the singer should be free to express himself however he chooses.
