Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that unregulated artificial intelligence (AI) poses a growing threat, predicting an increase in AI-powered cyberattacks over the coming year.
Gates raised the concerns during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, describing AI as “the most dangerous technology humans ever invented” and calling for stronger safeguards to prevent its misuse.
He questioned whether technology companies should be the only ones responsible for monitoring and regulating the development of AI, arguing that society must play a greater role in addressing the risks.
“The idea that for the most dangerous technology humans ever invented, that that's the final word, that just the companies themselves are the only check that society has... it's clear we're not doing enough,” Gates said.
His comments come amid growing concerns about the potential misuse of AI tools to carry out cyberattacks and other malicious activities.
Gates’ warning underscores the need for stronger oversight and accountability as AI technology continues to advance and becomes more widely accessible.
