The reported confrontation took place on the set of the family’s Hulu reality series, The Kardashians, after Kris obtained an advance copy of Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, written by journalist Jonathan Van Meter following five years of research into Kim’s life and career.
Van Meter disclosed details of the incident during a recent interview, revealing that Kim called him to recount what had happened. According to the author, Kim was at her younger sister Khloé Kardashian’s home when she learned that their mother had caused a scene during filming.
Although Van Meter did not identify the person involved in the affair discussed in the book, Kris previously admitted to having a relationship with Todd Waterman in 1989, while she was still married to her first husband, the late Robert Kardashian.
Kris and Robert married in 1978 and divorced in 1991. Their marriage produced four children: Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Rob Kardashian.
In a 2023 episode of The Kardashians, Kris revisited the affair during a conversation with Khloé, admitting that she had made a serious error in judgment.
Van Meter said the tension between Kris and Kim appeared to ease within a couple of days, although he suggested that viewers could eventually see the fallout play out on the family’s reality show.
Despite her mother’s reported reaction, Kim was said to have remained firm in her decision to cooperate with the biography.
According to Van Meter, Kim explained that after years of intense media scrutiny surrounding her family, the book offered an opportunity for someone with genuine insight into their lives to present a fuller and more considered account of their story.
The author described her explanation as the clearest indication of why she agreed to participate in the project.
Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future is scheduled for release on October 27, 2026.
Representatives for Kim and Kris had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the initial report by Page Six.
