Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, has revealed that she cried after her son left Portugal’s training camp following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Speaking to Portuguese magazine TV 7 Dias, the 71-year-old said she was shocked and saddened by the development, but advised the football star to remain calm and assured him of her support.
“I feel sad, it’s normal. It was a shock. My son could have left through the main door, and instead he left through the small door, but it’s okay, God will take care of it,” she said.
Dolores admitted that she shed tears over the controversy, adding that expressing her emotions helped her cope with the situation.
“I cried a little. It’s good too, to let go. We have to turn this around,” she added.
Recounting her first telephone conversation with Ronaldo after news of his departure emerged, his mother said he promised to explain what happened when they met in person.
“He told me: ‘Mom, don’t worry, I’ll tell you the truth when we’re all together.’
“And I replied: ‘OK, son, get over it.’ And that was it. I told him to calm down, but well, his head decided to do that. We’ll see. I gave him all my support; it was no use,” she said.
Dolores also defended her son’s contribution to Portuguese football, expressing the belief that he was not receiving the recognition he deserved for his achievements with the national team.
“They don’t value Cristiano. He’s the Portuguese player we have,” she said.
The controversy reportedly followed Ronaldo’s omission from the starting line-up during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo on September 27, when he remained an unused substitute.
The 41-year-old forward alleged that he had been assured of playing for about 30 minutes but was left on the bench despite warming up. He also claimed that a subsequent agreement on how the matter would be addressed publicly was not honoured.
The disagreement reportedly led to Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s training camp ahead of the team’s Nations League fixtures against Denmark. Jorge Jesus has disputed aspects of the forward’s account.
Despite the dispute, Ronaldo has maintained that he remains available to represent Portugal and is prepared to accept any disciplinary consequences arising from his departure.
