Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has outlined plans to introduce drone taxis, develop inland waterways and tackle flooding in Nigeria if elected president in 2027.
Speaking during an interview, Sowore said he would dredge a waterway linking the Lagos Lagoon to Epe to create an alternative transportation route while helping to address drainage challenges in the state.
According to him, the proposed project would enable residents to travel from the lagoon to Epe without getting caught in traffic, likening the idea to the use of waterways in Amsterdam.
Sowore also criticised Lagos’ drainage system, arguing that waterways and dikes could help reduce flooding. He added that Nigeria should explore emerging air transportation technologies, including drone taxis.
When asked whether the service could become a reality under his administration, he said he would allow companies developing drone transportation systems to test their technology in Nigeria.
The politician predicted that Nigerians could begin using drone taxis within his first four years in office. He explained that the electric aircraft would not require conventional airports or helicopter landing facilities to reach destinations such as Lekki.
Sowore further argued that the aircraft’s collision-avoidance systems could make it more difficult for kidnappers to target passengers. He also recalled how soldiers struggled to intercept commercial drones monitoring elections in 2019.
He said Nigeria could become a major hub for drone taxi manufacturing and transportation, adding that the aircraft would run on batteries as part of the country’s transition towards green energy.
Sowore also projected that drone taxis could transport about 200,000 workers to their workplaces in Abuja by 2030 or 2035.
When the interviewer questioned the timeline, noting that a president elected in 2027 would complete a first term in 2031, Sowore maintained that infrastructure projects should serve the country beyond the administrations that initiate them.
