US advocacy firm files $57m suit against President Tinubu, Fani-Kayode, others

A United States-based advocacy firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has filed a $57 million lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government of Nigeria, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and DCI Group.

The firm said the suit was filed on September 28, 2026, at the United States District Court for the District of Columbia over allegations of defamation and an alleged conspiracy to kidnap and physically harm its founder, Dr Von Batten.

In a statement issued on Monday, the firm said it was seeking $36 million jointly from Tinubu and the Federal Government, $3 million from Fani-Kayode and $18 million from DCI Group.

“We filed suit in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia against Ambassador Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and DCI Group for defamation and an alleged conspiracy to kidnap and physically harm Dr. Von Batten,” the statement read.

The firm said it kept the lawsuit quiet while legal service was being effected on the foreign parties in accordance with the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

It acknowledged that the claims against Tinubu and the Federal Government could face legal hurdles under the US law, but said it was prepared to pursue the case.

According to the firm, the alleged conspiracy was intended to defame, kidnap and physically harm Von Batten in an attempt to silence his advocacy before the White House and Congress concerning FBI and DEA records relating to Tinubu and allegations of heroin trafficking.

The allegations contained in the lawsuit have not been established by a court, and the defendants' responses to the claims were not included in the statement.
