‘Nobody gave her the chance to shine’ — Bimbo Akintola recounts Funke Akindele’s early career

Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has recounted the struggles her colleague, Funke Akindele, faced before rising to stardom, saying she spent years in the industry without getting the recognition she deserved.

Speaking during a Masterclass session hosted by actor Femi Adebayo at his new media hub, Euphoria 360, Akintola said Akindele had worked in the English film industry for years but struggled to get opportunities to showcase her talent.

She explained that Akindele later moved into the Yoruba film industry, where she began acting and producing before releasing Jenifa, the film that brought her widespread recognition.

According to Akintola, Akindele’s journey to success was not an overnight achievement, as she remained persistent despite years of limited recognition.

“She has been in the industry for a long time. She didn’t make it overnight. I remember seeing her on set; she was there for years, struggling. Nobody gave her the chance to shine. One thing she had was persistence; she never gave up. She moved to the Yoruba industry, started acting and producing, and before you know it, she did Jenifa, and the whole world knows who she is,” Akintola said.

The veteran actress added that aspiring actors who look up to Akindele should understand the hard work and challenges that preceded her success.

“So many of you now want to be like Funke Akindele; you don’t know her backstory, you don’t know her struggles. You figure it is overnight; no, it isn’t overnight,” she said.
