The viral story of a 17-year-old Nigerian TikToker celebrated for teaching herself Chinese has taken a new turn after language professionals publicly questioned the authenticity of her spoken Chinese.
Her story was widely shared across social media and news platforms.
However, the celebration has since sparked controversy, with several Mandarin speakers and professional translators claiming they struggle to understand the language spoken in her videos.
One of the most vocal critics is a professional Mandarin translator identified as NICL Mandarin, who released a video analysing the TikToker’s speech. According to the translator, much of what the teenager speaks does not resemble Standard Mandarin, nor does it appear to match other major Chinese language varieties such as Cantonese, Wu, Xiang, Hakka or Min.
The translator further argued that when the TikToker attempted to count from one to ten in Chinese during one of her TikTok live sessions, only a few numbers were pronounced correctly, while several others contained significant pronunciation and tonal errors.
The criticism has fueled debate online, with some social media users alleging that the teenager’s spoken Chinese consists largely of unintelligible sounds rather than coherent Chinese. Others have urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions until qualified native speakers and certified linguists independently assess her proficiency.
The controversy has also drawn attention to reports that the TikToker allegedly conducts paid Chinese language classes on TikTok. While screenshots and social media posts making the claim have circulated online, there has been no independent confirmation regarding the content or quality of those classes.
Language experts note that Mandarin relies heavily on accurate pronunciation and tones, meaning incorrect tones can significantly alter the meaning of words or render speech difficult for native speakers to understand.
