A notorious bandit identified as Auta Yankuzo has reportedly shared a photo showing a large amount of cash allegedly linked to kidnap ransom payments on social media.
“Bandits TikToker Auta Yankuzo has posted a ransom payment on his account yesterday. The picture appears to be from previous payment as the ground looks too dry to be of recent days,” Bakatsine wrote.
The journalist, who reports on insecurity and conflict issues in Nigeria’s North-West, suggested that although the image was recently posted online, it may have been taken during an earlier ransom transaction.
The development has raised fresh concerns over the growing use of social media by armed criminal groups to display wealth allegedly obtained from illegal activities.
It comes shortly after another video showing armed bandits flaunting large sums of money suspected to be proceeds from ransom payments surfaced online, sparking public outrage.
Kidnapping for ransom remains one of Nigeria’s major security challenges, particularly in the North-West and parts of the North-Central regions, where armed groups have continued to attack communities, travellers, schools and farmers.
Despite ongoing security operations by government forces, cases of abductions and attacks continue to be reported in several parts of the country.
