The Federal Government has concluded the evacuation of Nigerians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with the arrival of the final repatriation flight carrying 308 returnees back to the country.
With the arrival of the final batch, the Federal Government has successfully evacuated more than 1,500 Nigerians from South Africa under its emergency repatriation programme.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said the successful completion of the exercise reflected President Bola Tinubu's commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
She noted that the President's decision to extend the evacuation beyond the June 30 deadline earlier issued by anti-migrant groups in South Africa demonstrated his determination to protect Nigerians caught in crisis situations overseas.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the returnees and commended officials of the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, alongside other government agencies, for ensuring the smooth coordination of the evacuation.
She also encouraged the returnees to take advantage of available government support programmes as they begin the process of reintegrating into society.
The emergency evacuation exercise was launched following renewed xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa, which forced many Nigerians to seek assistance from the Federal Government to return home safely.
