Friends of 18-year-old athlete found dead following beach trip with friends go silent

An investigation is underway following the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was recovered days after he disappeared during a July Fourth beach outing with friends along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Wells, a football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was among a group of friends who travelled to Horn Island to celebrate the Independence Day holiday.

According to officials, the group returned from the trip without him, prompting concern when he failed to come home.

Search crews combed the waters and surrounding areas for several days before a body matching Wells' description was recovered near Horn Island on Monday.
