Nollywood stars have flooded actor IK Ogbonna with messages of love and encouragement after he shared an emotional tribute to his late best friend and colleague, Alexx Ekubo.
“Nothing prepared me for a loss like that,” the actor said, revealing that he had spent the past two months trying to understand grief, faith and the fragility of life. He reflected on the countless conversations and future plans he shared with Ekubo, describing the late actor as more than just a friend.
His emotional message prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues across the Nigerian film industry.
Veteran actress Ini Edo praised Ogbonna’s character, writing:
“You are one of the best humans out there. You have such a genuine heart that understands what love and loyalty really mean in this evil world. God will continue to comfort and preserve you.”
Filmmaker and actress Omoni Oboli also expressed her grief, saying:
“Alex’s death changes us forever. We are thankful for the life he lived and the example he left us. Miss him every day! My dearest IK! We will be ok. We will live for our brother, and affliction will never arise a second time. Love you.”
Other Nollywood stars also offered words of comfort.
Nancy Isime wrote, “One day at a time, Gee.”
Lilian Esoro encouraged him to “live intentionally” and “love completely,” adding that tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Lizzy Gold, Ini Dima-Okojie, Destiny Etiko, Chinney Love, Susan Peters, and Chizzy Alichi also sent prayers, encouragement and messages urging the actor to stay strong during the difficult period.
Alexx Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer, according to a statement released by his family. His death sent shockwaves through Nollywood, with colleagues and fans paying tribute to the actor’s talent, generosity and vibrant personality.
His funeral ceremonies, including a service of songs in Lagos and his burial in Abia State, drew a large gathering of celebrities such as IK Ogbonna, Ini Edo, Omoni Oboli, Nancy Isime, Bimbo Ademoye, Kunle Remi, AY Makun, KCee, E-Money, Cubana Chief Priest and several others who came to honour his memory.
IK Ogbonna and Alexx Ekubo shared one of Nollywood’s most admired friendships, often referring to each other as brothers. Their close bond was well documented through years of playful social media exchanges, public support and shared milestones.
Whether teasing each other over harmless banter, celebrating career achievements or standing by one another through personal challenges, the duo consistently demonstrated a friendship that resonated with fans.
Ogbonna notably stood by Ekubo following the actor’s highly publicised relationship breakup, taking him on a vacation to Benin Republic in what many described as a show of brotherly support. Ekubo, in turn, celebrated Ogbonna’s achievements, including congratulating him after he received an honorary doctorate.
With Ogbonna’s latest emotional tribute, many fans say his grief reflects the depth of a friendship that extended far beyond the cameras—one that continues to leave a lasting impression on Nollywood and its audience.
