Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has stirred debate on social media after sharing his opinion on the popular phrase, "school na scam," arguing that there is some truth to the saying.
"There's some truth to 'school na scam'. I'm doing better than all my lecturers. I met one of my professors months ago. I was in business class while he was in economy. Most wealthy men in this country didn't even go to school," he said.
His comments quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions from Nigerians.
While some agreed that a university degree does not automatically guarantee wealth or success, many argued that education should never be described as a scam.
One social media user wrote, "Education can never and will never be a scam. Getting an education isn't a guarantee of success, but your foundation will most likely suffer if you don't get at least a basic education."
Another commenter warned that influential figures should be careful with such statements, saying, "These little kids listen to us. How do you expect them to react when they hear a rich person saying 'school na scam'?"
Others pointed out that Jim Iyke's comparison with his former professor was unfair.
"Just because you saw him in economy doesn't mean you're doing better financially. You can't judge someone's success from one flight," a user commented.
Another added, "Being educated is not the same as having a degree. School isn't a scam. Chasing a certificate without acquiring knowledge is the real problem."
Despite the criticism, some users supported the actor's perspective, saying financial success can be achieved through entrepreneurship, vocational skills, and self-education, even without a university degree.
