'Make your own money' – Opeyemi Famakin tells women how to fight patriarchy

Food critic and content creator Opeyemi Famakin has sparked debate on social media after sharing his views on patriarchy, wealth, and gender roles, arguing that financial independence is one of the most effective ways women can challenge inequality.

Reacting to claims that many Igbo women have become radical feminists because of misogyny, Famakin said the issue goes beyond blaming men alone.

“Money. Money is the reason why all this happened to you, it is very, very easy to blame men, but you also have a large chunk to play.”

Drawing from his personal experience, he revealed that he was raised in a home where both of his parents were financially successful independently, saying it influenced his belief that women should build their own wealth.

“I grew up in a home where my father and my mother were rich together; my mother’s wealth wasn’t from my father’s money. She had her own money.”

Famakin argued that many women are encouraged to rely on wealthy partners, a situation he believes creates an imbalance in relationships as men continue to increase their wealth while their wives remain financially dependent.

“My whole point is, make your money, make your money, leave men alone.”

He also claimed that social media promotes different expectations for men and women, saying men are constantly pressured to become providers, while women are often told they are already perfect.

According to him, women who genuinely want to challenge patriarchy should also reject cultural expectations that place the entire financial burden on men.

“Respect is reciprocal.”

“The way you as an individual can fight the patriarchy is making money and leveling up to your husband’s level financially.”

Famakin admitted that his comments would likely generate criticism but stressed that they reflected his personal opinion.

“It’s just my two cents.”
