France captain Kylian Mbappé has made World Cup history after becoming the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice and the tournament's all-time leading goalscorer.
Mbappé had previously won the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he scored eight goals, making him the first player to claim the prestigious honour twice.
The 27-year-old also broke another major record after scoring twice in France's third-place playoff against England, taking his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals, one more than Messi's previous record of 21.
He reached the milestone in just 22 World Cup appearances, compared to Messi's 32 matches, maintaining an average of one goal per game across the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
Despite his individual achievements, Mbappé admitted he would have preferred to help France reach the World Cup final.
"When you score that many goals in the World Cup, it certainly takes you to a whole new level. But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final. It's good for my legacy once I've retired, but right now, that's not what's on my mind," he said.
