Messi overtakes Yamal in World Cup dribbling race

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has moved ahead of Spain's Lamine Yamal in the race for the most successful dribbles at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following another outstanding performance in the semi-finals.

The 39-year-old reached the top of the rankings after inspiring Argentina to a 2-1 comeback victory over England on Wednesday, producing a dazzling display that included nine successful dribbles and two assists.

Messi's creativity helped Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez score the goals that booked Argentina's place in Sunday's World Cup final against Spain.

According to official FIFA World Cup statistics, Messi has now completed 24 successful dribbles at the tournament, overtaking Yamal, who is second with 22.

Brazil's Vinicius Junior occupies third place with 16 successful dribbles, while Germany's Jamal Musiala and France's Michael Olise are tied on 15 each.

Messi will have the chance to extend his lead when Argentina take on Spain in the World Cup final.
