A 25-year-old Jos-based model, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as Ibee, has reportedly died after he was allegedly tortured and beaten by a group of youths who accused him of stealing a mobile phone in Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment behind the City of David area along Ring Road in Jos. Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos who was reportedly resolving an outstanding academic issue, had attended a social event before spending the night at a friend's apartment because it was too late to return home.
According to reports, the following morning, his friend claimed an iPhone was missing and accused Mbaya of taking it, saying they were the only two people who had stayed in the room. Although Mbaya initially left, he reportedly returned after being called back to explain himself.
On his return, he was allegedly confronted by his friend and a group of youths, who accused him of stealing the phone. Witnesses said the group brutally assaulted him with sticks and other objects for several hours in an attempt to force a confession until he lost consciousness.
A nurse who later examined him reportedly confirmed that he had died.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, announcing the arrest of three suspects — Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji — over the alleged culpable homicide. Police also said one of the suspects was seen in a viral video striking the deceased with a large wooden plank, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects who fled the scene.
Reacting to the incident, former Acting President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Prince Miaphen, described the alleged killing as "barbaric and unacceptable," calling for a thorough investigation and justice for everyone involved.
The police also condemned jungle justice, warning that anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be prosecuted according to the law.
