Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised an alleged Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) cameraman and recovered a Sony camcorder containing footage the military says points to the involvement of foreign operatives within the terrorist group.
According to the military, the operation followed a failed infiltration attempt by ISWAP fighters into Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday night. The terrorists reportedly attempted to take advantage of the darkness to overrun troops and loot cholera medical supplies but were detected and repelled after soldiers launched coordinated fire, forcing them to retreat with heavy casualties.
During a follow-up operation, troops recovered a Sony camcorder belonging to a slain terrorist cameraman. The military said preliminary forensic analysis of the device uncovered operational footage and propaganda materials allegedly featuring four senior ISWAP commanders and three foreign facilitators.
The foreign nationals were identified by the military as a Palestinian Arab known as Abu Ishaq, described as the group's overall trainer, a Moroccan Arab identified as Abu Thaiba, who allegedly serves as ISWAP's medical doctor, and another unidentified Arab operative.
Capt. Goni said the findings reinforce intelligence indicating that ISWAP continues to receive external support, specialist expertise and maintains transnational terrorist links.
Troops also recovered terrorist uniforms, several rounds of PKT and 7.62mm Special ammunition, as well as other combat items during the operation.
The military added that two soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and were airlifted for advanced medical treatment. Both personnel are said to be in stable condition.
