Pele's 1958 world cup final jersey sells for $4.9 million at auction

Pele's 1958 world cup final jersey sells for $4.9 million at auction

A jersey worn by Brazilian football legend Pele during the 1958 FIFA World Cup final has been sold for $4.9 million at an auction in the United States.

The historic blue shirt, worn when Brazil defeated hosts Sweden 5-2 to win their first-ever World Cup title, was auctioned by Sotheby's in New York on Thursday, July 16.

Pele, who was just 17 years old at the time, scored twice in the final to help Brazil lift the trophy and begin a new era of dominance in world football.

The winning bid came after competition from four other bidders, making the jersey the second most expensive football shirt ever sold at auction.

The record remains the $9.3 million paid for Diego Maradona's Argentina jersey from the iconic 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England, where he scored both the controversial "Hand of God" goal and the stunning solo effort later named the "Goal of the Century."
