The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that one suspect has been arrested while two others remain at large.
According to the police, the attack was reported at the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on July 29 by a resident of the community.
Preliminary investigations showed that at about 2:28 a.m. on July 28, the principal suspect, Garba Daudu, allegedly conspired with two others identified as Ya'u Garba and Musa, whose full identity is yet to be confirmed, to invade the residence of Audu Sabo.
The suspects allegedly accused Sabo's wife, Habse Ubale, of being a witch before launching a violent attack on the family.
During the assault, Habse Ubale was reportedly attacked with a machete, while Sale Audu (12) and Yakubu Audu (14) were beaten with sticks, leaving all three victims with serious injuries.
A combined team of police officers, hunters and local vigilantes responded to the scene and evacuated the victims to the General Hospital, Gamawa, for treatment.
Ubale was later confirmed dead by doctors, while one of the injured victims remains on admission. The other two have since been treated and discharged.
Police said one suspect was swiftly arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining two fleeing suspects.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, warned residents against taking the law into their own hands or engaging in violence based on superstition.
He assured the public that everyone involved in the killing would be brought to justice and urged residents to remain law-abiding while providing useful information to aid the arrest of the fleeing suspects.
