A prophetess has advised young women to establish financial independence before getting married, warning that being financially dependent can make it difficult to leave an unhealthy marriage.
Speaking to her female members, she urged women who do not have jobs or a source of income to focus on building themselves before considering marriage.
“If you are a young lady and you don’t have a job or anything you are doing, don’t get married,” she said.
The prophetess also stressed the importance of being able to meet basic personal needs, using the ability to pay for a flight ticket as an example of financial independence.
“If you cannot pay for your flight ticket, don’t marry,” she advised.
According to her, while a man may be able to rebuild his life more easily after leaving a difficult situation, women can face greater challenges when trying to start over after marriage.
“A man can navigate his life, but a woman cannot navigate inside marriage. It’s hard. It’s very, very hard for you to navigate,” she said.
She explained that some women remain in marriages that are not right for them not necessarily because they cannot leave, but because they are worried about how to rebuild their lives after leaving.
“That’s why you see some women when they get married to somebody that is not meant for them, they will stay there. It’s not as if they cannot come out; they are thinking of how to come out and begin to start all over again,” she added.
The prophetess further noted that marriage has changed over the years, arguing that the realities facing couples today are different from those experienced by previous generations.
She encouraged young women to develop themselves and have something they can rely on before entering marriage.
