American singer Mary J. Blige has revealed why she chose not to have children when she was younger, admitting that she sometimes regrets the decision as she has grown older.
Speaking on the Michelle Obama Podcast, Blige explained that watching family members struggle with raising children influenced her decision not to become a mother.
The singer said she saw relatives deal with the demands of childcare, including relying on babysitters and sacrificing their freedom, which made her decide that motherhood was not for her at the time.
“When I was younger, I saw my family members struggle raising kids, needing babysitters, not having freedom, so when I was younger I made the choice not to have any kids,” she said.
However, Blige said her perspective changed with age after watching her relatives develop strong bonds with their teenage children and seeing how important those relationships had become to them.
“But now as I got older and get to see how their teenagers are valuable to them, I sometimes regret not having them early too,” she said.
The singer’s remarks reflect how her views on motherhood have evolved over time, with her earlier concerns about the demands of raising children giving way to some regret about not experiencing parenthood herself.
