A 20-year-old phone and gadget seller, Olusola Olumide, has narrated how he allegedly crushed a police sergeant to death during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos State.
The incident occurred along Olugbede Street in the Egbeda area of the state while police officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation.
According to the account, the officers signalled Olumide to stop, and he initially complied with the instruction.
However, as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, Olumide allegedly suddenly sped off, knocking the officer down.
The sergeant was reportedly dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres as police officers and passers-by attempted to get the driver to stop.
Olumide was eventually chased and arrested in connection with the incident.
Okediji reportedly sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
He was later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
