Anambra Flood: Missing 6-Year-Old Pupil Success Ezenwafor Laid To Rest In Ekwulobia

The six-year-old pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, Awka, Anambra State, who was swept away by floodwaters, has been found de@d, 24 hours after the tragic incident. The pupil, identified as Success Ezenwafor, was reportedly on his way to school with other pupils when the bus conveying them became trapped by floodwaters around the Nibo Isiagu Ring Road in Awka South LGA. Nine other occupants of the vehicle, comprising seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued alive by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, with assistance from residents. They were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, where they are receiving medical attention. Success, however, was carried away by the flood and remained missing until his body was recovered the following morning.
His family spokesperson described the incident as a painful loss, announcing that arrangements had been concluded to transfer his remains from the hospital to his hometown, Ula, Ekwulobia. “With total submission to God, we announce that our little son, Success Ezenwafor, has joined the Church triumphant,” the family stated. The tragedy occurred following a heavy downpour that submerged roads, schools, markets and other public and private places across the state. The rainfall also reportedly caused the collapse of two buildings and about 20 walls around Oguguo Nebe Road. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, had earlier confirmed that operatives attached to the Command’s Safe School Initiative rescued nine people after receiving a distress call about the incident.

The remains of Success Ezenwafor, the UNIZIK Primary School pupil swept away by floodwaters in Awka on Tuesday, have been laid to rest in his hometown of Ula, Ekwulobia, Aguata LGA.

Success was among the schoolchildren caught in the devastating flooding along the Nibo–Isiagu axis. While the other occupants were rescued, Success was swept away, and his body was subsequently recovered.

It is heartbreaking that such a young life has been cut short in such tragic circumstances.

For clarity: reports circulating online that Success was later found alive appear to have confused this tragedy with a separate flooding incident in Enugu State, where another young boy named Success was rescued alive after reportedly spending about 24 hours in a ditch. That video does not show Success Ezenwafor.

Today, however, our focus remains on a grieving family saying goodbye to their son.
