Piacenti, who lived in Chester, New Jersey, worked as Vice President for Business Selection and Conflicts at Bank of America. The bank’s New York headquarters is located about a block from where the attack occurred.
The attack happened at about 4:24 p.m. near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, shortly after a 68-year-old man was stabbed in the abdomen while waiting to cross the street with his wife. He survived the attack and was taken to hospital.
Police identified the attacker as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens. Authorities said she pulled two kitchen knives from a Target shopping bag and began attacking strangers.
Within about 20 seconds of stabbing the elderly man, Cisneros allegedly headed north toward West 42nd Street, where she stabbed Piacenti in the abdomen, killing her.
Cisneros was later confronted by police near an NYPD substation around West 43rd Street. During a tense four-minute standoff, she reportedly threatened officers, saying, “I’m not dropping anything. I would rather k+lł both of you. I will k+lł you,” according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Police attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but officers eventually opened fire after she allegedly continued advancing while armed with the knives. Bystander cellphone videos captured her swinging the weapons and charging toward officers before she was shot dead.
Piacenti was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she sang with the Penn Dischord a cappella group. She married her husband, Frank, in August 2024, and the couple had recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary.
