The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a shooting around 5 p.m. on Saturday at a location off Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale.
Akamani was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the shooting.
The deceased was a professor in the Department of Forestry at SIU Carbondale, where he taught courses in forest recreation and conservation social science.
Following an investigation into the incident, police arrested Akamani’s 35-year-old wife, Betty Akamani, in connection with the shooting. She is facing multiple charges over her alleged involvement in the killing.
The sheriff’s office said the Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office and Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akamani’s death is ongoing.
