Ejim was arrested on Saturday after a video circulated online showing a man allegedly firing a pistol sporadically from the window of a moving black Jeep.
The police said the vehicle was reportedly rented by Ejim and members of his group for the sign-out celebration at the university. The suspected cult members were also alleged to have fired shots at different locations across Calabar while heading to the school campus.
Following the circulation of the video, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, ordered the immediate identification and arrest of those involved.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, and operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) subsequently launched an intelligence-led operation to track down the vehicle and suspects linked to the incident.
The driver of the vehicle was first arrested, while information obtained during the operation led police operatives to a hotel in Calabar, where Ejim was subsequently apprehended.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the police identified Ejim as a 24-year-old student of UNICROSS.
The police said the suspect allegedly identified himself as a leader of the Vikings Confraternity during questioning and admitted to being the person seen firing the shots in the viral footage.
According to the command, Ejim told investigators that he participated in the sign-out activities and claimed that another suspected member of the group handed him the pistol allegedly used in the incident.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the incident.
The command added that the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and the movement of the vehicle remained under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and comprehensively.
