IKEDC technician survives electric shock while working on power pole in Lagos

IKEDC technician survives electric shock while working on power pole in Lagos

A technician with Ikeja Electric Plc (IKEDC) has survived an electric shock while working on a power pole around Gbagada Bus Stop in Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Thursday, causing panic among residents and commuters as the technician was left trapped on an elevated ladder after being shocked.

A video circulating online showed two IKEDC field workers attempting to rescue their colleague, who appeared unconscious and was stuck on the ladder attached to the power pole.

The technician’s head was seen facing downward while the lower part of his body remained positioned against the pole. He could, however, be seen moving his arms and body as his colleagues worked to bring him down safely.

An eyewitness who recorded the incident urged people at the scene to remain calm, saying the technician had survived the initial shock.

“This is Gbagada Bus Stop. This incident just happened now. Light just shocked the guy; he is a NEPA guy. Now they’re trying to bring him down; he’s not dead,” the eyewitness said.

The incident has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the risks faced by electricity workers while handling power infrastructure and high-voltage equipment.

Electricity technicians routinely work in challenging conditions as they respond to faults, carry out repairs and maintain power infrastructure across communities.

When contacted, Ikeja Electric confirmed that the technician survived the incident and was receiving treatment at a hospital.

The company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, said measures were being put in place to prevent a recurrence.

“He is being treated. He is recuperating in hospital. All necessary safety protocols are being put in place to ensure it does not happen again,” Okotie said.
