Speaking during a podcast, she said she watched her mother suffer years of abuse from her father and even recalled helping to clean blood from her mother’s body after she was beaten.
The woman said her mother got married to her father at the age of 16 and had her first child at 19 before having four more sons.
According to her, she prayed and cried to God while she was still a Christian, asking not to grow up to become like her mother.
“I’m not going to be anybody’s wife, neither am I going to be anybody’s mother. As long as this life is concerned,” she said.
She explained that her mother had become an “enabler” because she lacked the support system needed to leave the abusive relationship.
“I literally helped clean blood away from my mummy’s body. Like, her back was bleeding several times. Several times. Several times that woman sat in tears and crying, praying and praying and hoping for a change that did not come,” she recounted.
The woman said her mother eventually died at the age of 45, leaving her deeply affected by everything she witnessed while growing up.
She questioned calls for women to return to the kind of marriages and family roles associated with previous generations, arguing that many women from that era endured painful experiences that should not be romanticised.
“You want to sit down there in front of your podcast telling women that we may need to return back to how our mothers used to be. This just made me more… So what mothers are you trying to tell us to be?” she asked.
