New York Times engineering director shot dead in California, in-laws arrested

A 40-year-old engineering director at The New York Times has been shot dead at a sports complex in Dublin, California, with his 77-year-old parents-in-law arrested in connection with the killing.

The shooting occurred around 3:08 p.m. on Saturday at Dublin Sports Grounds after police received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots.

A police sergeant reportedly found the victim, identified as McKinsey, lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses helped officers locate McKinsey’s parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both residents of Dublin, near the scene. The couple were detained within minutes and later booked into Santa Rita Jail without bail.

According to police, the suspects face allegations including first-degree murder, conspiracy, negligent firearm discharge and child endangerment. Chen is also facing a separate fraud-related conspiracy allegation. They are expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

Witnesses gave varying accounts of the incident. One told CBS San Francisco that the masked couple took turns shooting McKinsey, while another said he heard five or six gunshots before seeing the victim bleeding from his chest.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or specified what role each suspect allegedly played.

The killing comes amid legal disputes involving McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang. Both parties sought domestic violence restraining orders in 2025, while McKinsey filed for divorce in December. The couple also remained involved in a child-custody dispute this year.

McKinsey had also faced misdemeanor child-endangerment-related charges in 2025. Authorities have not established any connection between those legal disputes and the fatal shooting.

McKinsey joined The New York Times in 2023 after previously working with companies and organisations including Splunk, Oracle, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

He held computer science degrees from Georgia Tech and the University of California, Berkeley.
