Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade has opened up about marriage, saying there are times when she does not feel in love with her husband, Matthew Ekeinde.
The actress explained that she and her husband have built their relationship around honesty, openness, mutual respect and an understanding that both of them are individuals with their own journeys.
She said her husband knows her personality and understands that she is open about how she feels, adding that they discuss issues whenever either of them has concerns.
According to Omotola, she does not view marriage as something that should prevent partners from maintaining their individuality or personal space.
“We don't carry this husband and wife thing on the head as if it's some sacred thing. It's not that serious. We are partners,” she said.
The actress explained that both she and her husband chose to share their lives together, rather than being together because either of them was completely dependent on the other.
“I’m with you because I choose to be with you. He's with me because he chooses to be with me,” she said.
Omotola also acknowledged that there are days when romantic feelings may not be as strong as usual, saying she sometimes questions why she chose her husband in the first place.
“My husband knows that I don't love him all the time. There are days that I'd see fantabulous guys and I'd be like, ‘I picked this one over you?’” she said.
She added that her husband also has moments when he may not feel the same level of affection, noting that they both understand the realities of being human.
According to the actress, their shared values have also helped make their marriage easier to navigate.
Omotola said her commitment to her husband is also connected to her faith, explaining that she believes God gave her a mandate to stand by him.
She revealed that when she feels disconnected from him emotionally, she turns to God and waits for things to improve, adding that her husband eventually “comes back around.”
The actress further advised couples to be honest with one another and discuss their challenges instead of pretending that everything is always perfect.
She said people should remember that they are human beings with weaknesses and should allow their partners room to maintain their individuality.
Omotola stressed that mutual respect, personal space, shared values and open communication have helped her and her husband navigate their marriage.
