Lamine Yamal overtakes Harry Kane in 2026 Ballon d’Or power rankings

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has moved ahead of Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane to top The Independent’s latest 2026 Ballon d’Or power rankings following his impressive performances for club and country.

Yamal’s contributions to Barcelona’s LaLiga title triumph and Spain’s World Cup success have strengthened his chances of winning the prestigious individual award. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 25, according to the report.
The 19-year-old reportedly scored 24 goals and provided 18 assists across competitions during Barcelona’s previous campaign. He has also made an impressive start to the new season, scoring eight goals in his first eight appearances.

His performances for Spain have further boosted his credentials, including a goal in the team’s 3-2 victory over England at Wembley.
Yamal, who finished as runner-up in 2025, is now considered the leading contender to claim his first Ballon d’Or.

Kane occupies second place after a prolific 2025/26 campaign with Bayern Munich. The England captain reportedly scored 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, helping the German club secure a league and cup double.

He also scored six goals during England’s World Cup campaign. Despite his impressive numbers, Kane acknowledged that the final decision rests with the voters.
“Of course, now it is out of my hands, it is down to the voters and the people who decide it,” he said. “The season I had was my best season by far and we’ll have to wait and see.”
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe ranks third after reportedly scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances last season. The France international also finished as the World Cup’s leading scorer with 10 goals and has continued his scoring form into the new campaign.
Barcelona midfielder Rodri occupies fourth place after playing a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph. However, his chances have been affected by limited playing time following his return from injury.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi completes the top five after helping Argentina reach the World Cup final, where they lost to Spain.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele, the previous winner of the award, sits sixth in the rankings, while Manchester City striker Erling Haaland occupies eighth place.
