‘More likely a no than a yes’ — Ronaldo’s sister on his Portugal future

‘More likely a no than a yes’ — Ronaldo’s sister on his Portugal future

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has cast doubt on the footballer’s international future, saying it is “more likely a no than a yes” when asked whether he would continue playing for Portugal following a reported fallout with coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward reportedly sparked controversy during the recent international break after leaving Portugal’s camp over what he described as “broken promises” by Jesus.

The dispute reportedly followed Ronaldo’s omission from the starting line-up during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently suspended him as disciplinary proceedings over his conduct got underway.

Speaking at a book launch in Lisbon, which was also attended by Jesus, Aveiro said both men had been hurt by the situation.

“I think both [Cristiano and Jorge Jesus] are hurt; it was a situation they experienced, not me. I’m speaking for my brother,” she said.

She added that the situation appeared to have stalled, leaving the future uncertain.

Asked whether the pair could reconcile, Aveiro said it would be difficult, adding: “When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal.”

She also expressed sadness over the reaction to her brother, arguing that people had forgotten his past contributions to Portuguese football.

“I’m speechless; it’s very difficult to see my brother go through this. He is one of the people who least deserve this,” she said.

Aveiro’s comments came after Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, also criticised the situation, claiming that her son was not being valued. She said he could have left “through the front door” but instead departed “through the back door”.

Although Ronaldo has reportedly apologised to his teammates, he remains subject to disciplinary proceedings while the investigation continues. He could also miss Portugal’s entire November international break, depending on the outcome.

In a statement, the Portuguese Football Federation said disciplinary proceedings were initiated on October 9, 2026, to determine whether events reported on October 7 warranted further action. The case was referred to its Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10 and remains confidential pending the conclusion of the investigation.
