American rapper Rick Ross, whose real name is William Roberts II, has been arrested in Miami-Dade County after voluntarily surrendering to police over allegations of domestic violence made by his ex-girlfriend.
According to law enforcement sources, the woman contacted police on Tuesday and alleged that Ross became violent during an incident on August 28 at the home they shared.
She reportedly told police that she was asleep when Ross woke her over a social media photo in which she had been tagged.
According to her account, Ross accused her of lying and allegedly slapped her in the face before striking her several times in the chest after she denied being involved with another man.
The woman further alleged that Ross choked her until she struggled to breathe, grabbed her by her ponytail and slammed her against a wall.
She reportedly provided police with photographs of injuries that she said were sustained during the alleged incident.
Ross was arrested on charges of felony battery by strangulation and misdemeanor battery, with both charges listed as being related to domestic violence.
He is being held at the Miami-Dade County jail on a $5,000 bond for the strangulation charge and $1,000 for the battery charge.
Court records show that Ross has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 22.
Ross’s lawyers, Steve Sadow and Bradley Horenstein, have denied the allegations, saying the rapper is being wrongfully accused.
The lawyers also questioned the circumstances surrounding the complaint, noting that Ross’s ex-girlfriend did not report the alleged incident to police until about a month later.
They urged the public not to prejudge the rapper while the case goes through the judicial process.
The allegations against Ross have not been proven in court.
