The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has disclosed that the Ebola patient in Nigeria is a 42-year-old Swiss national and the wife of a staff member at the country’s embassy in Abuja.
The development comes after the Nigerian government confirmed an Ebola virus disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), involving a woman who recently travelled to Nigeria from Uganda and tested positive for the virus.
In an emailed statement, the Swiss foreign ministry said the woman, who was born in Uganda and resides in Abuja, had been receiving treatment at a private clinic in the Nigerian capital for about a week after developing symptoms.
The ministry said she was believed to have contracted the virus during a trip to Uganda approximately two weeks earlier.
It added that the woman’s husband, who travelled with her to Uganda, had been placed in isolation despite showing no symptoms.
“The woman has been in a private clinic in Abuja for around a week with symptoms. She is believed to have contracted the virus whilst travelling to Uganda around two weeks ago.
“Her husband is in isolation, he has not shown any symptoms. He was travelling with his wife when she is believed to have contracted Ebola,” the statement said.
