TV host Morayo Brown has cautioned parents against sending teenagers abroad for secondary education without first ensuring they are emotionally mature and prepared to handle the challenges of living in a foreign country.
Brown gave the advice while reacting to reports that a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy was k!lled in the United States following an alleged bullying incident.
Reflecting on her own experience, the presenter recalled being bullied when she attended high school in the US at the age of 15.
She said some of her classmates targeted her because she was African, putting dirty items in her locker and pushing her during morning sports activities.
According to Brown, she did not report the incidents because she was new to the school and wanted to fit in. She added that some students repeatedly made her feel unwelcome, with the bullying becoming worse as she prepared to attend prom.
The TV host stressed that parents must consider their children's emotional readiness and ensure they have adequate guidance and support before sending them abroad for secondary education.
“University abroad is fine, but high school can be treacherous,” she said.
She also urged parents to maintain regular communication with their children, ask about their experiences and pay attention to any difficulties they may face while adjusting to life in another country.
