Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken publicly about his future after Portugal's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he will not rush into making any retirement decisions.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said he plans to spend time with his family before deciding what comes next in his career.
"It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll have time to think about the rest, to be with my family, not make rash decisions, and just get on with life. That's football, that's the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to move on," he said.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner also reflected on his achievements with the Portuguese national team, saying he leaves the World Cup with no regrets despite never winning the trophy.
"The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly. That's why, I repeat, I'm leaving with a clear conscience, at my best, and that's it. Tomorrow is a new day, and life goes on," Ronaldo added.
Although he never lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy, Ronaldo enjoyed one of the greatest international careers in football history. He captained Portugal to their first major title at UEFA Euro 2016 and later led the team to victory in the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
