The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), has assured Nigerians that the era of ballot box snatching and manual manipulation of election results is over ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between both agencies on voter education and improving citizens’ understanding of the electoral process ahead of the polls.
According to the INEC chairman, advancements in election technology have made it difficult for votes to be stolen or results to be altered manually.
He said technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) have helped improve transparency and protect the integrity of elections.
“Advances in election technology have made ballot box snatching and manual manipulation of results a thing of the past,” he said.
However, Amupitan noted that technology alone cannot guarantee credible elections without an informed and active electorate.
He expressed concern over voter apathy and misinformation, saying many Nigerians still do not fully understand changes in the electoral system.
The INEC chairman stated that recent elections in the Federal Capital Territory and Ekiti State recorded improvements in logistics, biometric accreditation and result uploads, but also revealed challenges such as low voter turnout, confusion over polling unit changes and voter registration transfers.
He called for stronger grassroots voter education to encourage participation, tackle vote-buying and misinformation, and help Nigerians understand the importance of their votes.
Amupitan also pledged INEC’s commitment to working with the NOA to deepen civic awareness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
