Veteran Yoruba actor, director and producer Sunny Alli has dismissed widespread beliefs in money rituals, saying the popular claims have no logical basis and should not be treated as reality.
According to Alli, he intentionally avoids writing scripts centred on witchcraft because such stories are based on claims that cannot be verified.
“There are some storylines that can never be in my scripts. Like witches holding meetings, I don't believe it is realistic because nobody knows if it is true. Do they rent a hall? Some even say they wear red clothes. Who has actually been there?” he asked.
The veteran actor also questioned how filmmakers confidently portray witches despite the lack of evidence.
“Who is the witch that documented everything? How do witches even look? I can write about a hit-and-run because it happens in real life. Those are things people can relate to,” he said.
Alli further rejected the popular belief in money rituals, arguing that the claims do not stand up to basic reasoning.
“They say a demon brings money. Does the demon have a printing machine? Will it steal money from the Central Bank of Nigeria or a Bureau de Change?” he asked.
He added that whenever he challenged people to explain how money rituals supposedly worked, they were unable to provide convincing answers.
“When they couldn't answer, they came up with another myth that the money comes through a contract the person never even bid for. I love realistic scripts. I don't believe in money rituals,” he said.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians debating whether Nollywood's portrayal of ritual practices has contributed to the widespread belief in money rituals.
