Why must we wear another hair texture to feel beautiful? — Maraji speaks on beauty standards among black women

Popular content creator Maraji has spoken out against beauty standards that make many Black women feel they need to wear different hair textures before they can feel beautiful, urging them to embrace and appreciate their natural hair.

In a video shared online, Maraji questioned why Black women are often encouraged to hide their natural hair in cornrows before wearing wigs or extensions with straighter or looser textures.

"Why are we the only people who have to wear another texture of hair to feel beautiful? Why are we always told to hide our hair in cornrows before wearing another texture?" she asked.

She admitted that she once believed her natural hair was somehow "not good enough," but said she later realised that mindset was a result of societal beauty standards rather than reality.

Despite her love for wigs, Maraji stressed that women should also give their natural hair the care and attention it deserves.

"I will always love my wigs, but I believe we should also allow our hair see sunlight."

She also lamented that many salons lack the expertise to properly care for natural hair, making it difficult for women who choose to wear their hair naturally.

"What makes it worse is most salons don't know what to do when your hair is natural, which in turn makes natural hair a luxury."
