“If I’m older than you, don’t call me dear, love or hun” — Toke Makinwa warns

“If I’m older than you, don’t call me dear, love or hun” — Toke Makinwa warns

Media personality Toke Makinwa has warned people against addressing her with terms of endearment such as “dear”, “love” or “hun” when speaking to her, particularly when she is significantly older than them.

Makinwa issued the warning in a social media post shared on Friday, where she addressed the use of overly familiar terms when interacting with older people.

“Thank you Mr Tony for opening the floor, while we are at it, if I am significantly older than you and we are not familiar in any way, resist the urge to use terms of endearment such as ‘dear, love or hun’ while addressing me. Thanks,” she wrote.

The media personality’s message appears to emphasise the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries and showing respect when addressing people who are older, especially when there is no close relationship between them.

Her post has since sparked reactions online, with social media users weighing in on the use of terms such as “dear”, “love” and “hun” when speaking to older people or people they are not personally familiar with.
