A man living with HIV has opened up about his diagnosis, revealing that years of risky sexual behaviour and unprotected encounters preceded the moment he discovered he was HIV-positive.

Speaking during an interview, he said he has been living with HIV for nine years and admitted that before his diagnosis, he frequently engaged in casual sex and other compulsive sexual behaviours.

According to him, whenever he travelled to a new state, one of the first things he would do was look for a brothel, adding that he often sought sexual encounters without considering the risks.

He also disclosed that he struggled with compulsive masturbation, saying it affected him even in places of worship.

Reflecting on his past, he said very few sex workers insisted on condom use, claiming that many were less likely to demand protection after being paid.

The man also highlighted the importance of regular HIV testing, stressing that appearances can be deceptive.

He recalled attending to a woman who tested positive despite looking healthy and shared another case involving a married woman living with HIV whose husband was unaware of her status.

Speaking about his own diagnosis, he said he began experiencing persistent symptoms, including diarrhoea and fever, before eventually getting tested.

Now on antiretroviral therapy (ARVs), he said he hopes sharing his story will encourage people to practise safer sex, get tested regularly, and seek treatment early if diagnosed.
