The former American actress, who married Harry in 2018, has repeatedly spoken publicly about the challenges she experienced during her time as a working member of the British royal family.
Both Meghan and Harry have also criticised the British media over its treatment of the duchess, with Harry telling a court this year that the press made her life “an absolute misery”.
Historian Ed Owens said Meghan’s return to Britain could prove more challenging than Harry’s, given her complicated relationship with the country and the royal family.
“I think there’s more questions sort of over her and how she re-adapts to life back in the United Kingdom” than about Harry, Owens said.
He added that it remained difficult to predict how she would handle the transition, noting that she had repeatedly attempted to reinvent her public image and relaunch her brand over the past six years.
Harry, meanwhile, has maintained strong connections to Britain through his charitable work and has expressed a desire for his children to develop closer relationships with members of the royal family.
The couple’s reported decision to return to the UK six years after stepping back from royal duties is said to have been influenced partly by an acting opportunity offered to Meghan for a UK-based production.
Australian news website News.com.au first reported the development, while a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan did not deny the report when contacted.
Experts believe Meghan is likely to prioritise family life during the move, particularly her children, Archie and Lilibet.
The children have reportedly already been enrolled in a British school, while the couple are also said to have selected a new home.
Meghan’s professional prospects in the United States have also faced some setbacks following the end of her Netflix deal for her lifestyle and cookery programme, With Love, Meghan.
She is expected to make a brief appearance as herself in a film produced late last year, while she also made a guest appearance on MasterChef Australia during a trip to the country.
Talent manager Jonathan Shalit, chairman of InterTalent Rights Group, said Meghan could still attract interest from the British entertainment industry if she decided to return to acting.
“If Meghan decided tomorrow that she seriously wanted to act again, directors and producers would absolutely want to meet her and audition her,” he said.
However, public opinion remains a major challenge for Meghan in Britain. A YouGov poll released in late July found that 65 per cent of Britons held an unfavourable view of her.
Since stepping down from royal duties, Harry and Meghan have spoken openly about their experiences with the British press.
“Truth be told, no matter how hard I tried, no matter how good I was, no matter what I did, they were still going to find a way to destroy me,” Meghan said in their 2022 Netflix documentary.
Her arrival into the royal family had initially been widely welcomed, with some seeing her as a modernising influence on the institution, but her relationship with the British media and royal establishment later became increasingly strained.
