Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested two suspected members of a notorious ‘one-chance’ robbery syndicate operating within the Abeokuta metropolis.
The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Olajide Rasaq and 29-year-old Bidemi Tijani, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation on Saturday.
The command had reportedly received actionable intelligence that members of the syndicate, who allegedly disguise themselves as commercial taxi operators to rob unsuspecting passengers, had been spotted in a taxi heading towards the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta.
The suspects were accused of using the guise of commercial transportation to dispossess passengers of mobile phones, cash and other valuables.
Acting on the intelligence, tactical operatives of the VCRU reportedly pursued the vehicle after its occupants attempted to flee before intercepting it and arresting the two suspects.
Confirming the arrests on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspects allegedly confessed during interrogation to being active members of the ‘one-chance’ robbery syndicate.
Babaseyi said investigations were ongoing to track down other members of the group, determine the full extent of their activities and recover suspected exhibits.
He quoted the state Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, as commending the VCRU operatives for their swift response, vigilance and professionalism during the operation.
Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities across Ogun State, warning that criminals would have no safe haven in the state.
The police commissioner also urged residents and commuters to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or criminal activities through the Gateway Shield platform or the police emergency lines.
