Davido raises alarm over declining demand for Nigerian artistes abroad

Afrobeats superstar Davido has raised concerns over what he described as a decline in the international demand for Nigerian artistes, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The singer spoke during a podcast session with The Uncut Podcast, where he reflected on the changing fortunes of Nigerian musicians performing outside the country.

Davido said he hopes to see veteran Nigerian artistes return home in the next decade, suggesting that the growing familiarity of Nigerian music in international markets may be affecting the ability of some artistes to attract large audiences.

“In the next 10 years I want the music OGs to come back to Nigeria. There is already ‘see finish’ in London, America, honestly,” he said.

He compared the current situation with what he described as the state of the Nigerian music industry three years ago, when several artistes could reportedly headline and sell out shows in London.

“Three years ago at least 20 artists can come to London and do show and get sold out, but now I can count maybe 4 or 5 and we all know them. We can all see the shift,” Davido said.

The singer’s remarks have sparked conversations about the changing global market for Afrobeats and whether the genre’s increased international exposure has affected the demand for Nigerian artistes in some established music markets.
