The baby was recovered from the custody of the alleged principal suspect and subsequently reunited with the mother.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu.
According to the statement, the incident was reported to the police on August 12, 2026, after Aondofa Chia informed officers that his wife had given birth at a healthcare facility in Gboko but the newborn subsequently went missing.
Following the complaint, operatives attached to A Division, Gboko, immediately launched an investigation and arrested nine suspects for questioning.
Further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects at about 10pm the same day, bringing the number of suspects in custody to 11.
The police identified the alleged principal suspect as 35-year-old Asugh, from whose custody the newborn was recovered.
“The stolen newborn baby was subsequently rescued from her custody and safely reunited with the mother,” Aondongu stated.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and establish the individual roles and level of involvement of each suspect.
Commending the officers for their swift response, the Commissioner of Police assured residents that the command would continue to take decisive action against threats to lives and property.
The command also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
