Police summon VeryDarkMan, probe AIG over mvrder cover-up claims

The Nigeria Police Force has invited social critic Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), to provide evidence supporting his allegations against Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Moshood Jimoh, while confirming that the senior officer is also being questioned over the claims.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Force spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu, the police disclosed that the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, has commenced an administrative review into the allegations raised by VDM.

According to the statement, the Force CID formally invited VDM on July 30, 2026, asking him to appear before investigators to substantiate claims he made publicly.

VDM had alleged that AIG Jimoh manipulated investigations into the 2023 killing of youth leader Sheriff Salami and the 2024 murder of Ademola Akinloye, son of an Ajiran traditional ruler. He also claimed businessman Hammed Akanbi was wrongly implicated in the case and challenged the police to produce original witness statements.

The Nigeria Police Force, however, noted that the criminal case is already before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), stressing that it will not litigate the matter on social media.

The police reiterated that while Nigerians have the constitutional right to demand accountability and express their views, allegations against officers must be investigated through established legal and administrative channels.

The Force stated that every credible allegation, regardless of the rank of the officer involved, will be investigated in line with the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations and other internal disciplinary procedures.

It also warned that while genuine complaints would be thoroughly examined, false and defamatory allegations intended to damage the reputation of officers or the institution could attract legal consequences.

The police urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended by the Force CID and cooperate with investigators, insisting that disciplinary actions can only be taken after due process.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and transparency, the Nigeria Police Force maintained that no officer is above the law and that every complaint will be handled impartially in accordance with the law.
