X replaces revenue sharing with new Programme to reward original content creators

X has announced plans to discontinue its Revenue Sharing programme and replace it with a new Original Content Rewards programme designed to reward creators for producing original and engaging content on the platform.

The social media company announced the changes on Friday through its X Creators handle, saying the new programme would recognise creators who contribute original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary.

“Today, we’re introducing the Original Content Rewards Program, a new way to reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity, and commentary to X,” the company said.

X said it would stop accepting new applications for the Revenue Sharing programme immediately, while existing participants would continue earning until September 7, 2026.

Existing creators will receive three final Revenue Sharing payments, with two scheduled for August 14 and August 28, while the final payment covering earnings up to September 7 is expected around September 11.

From September 8, existing Revenue Sharing participants will be able to apply for the new Original Content Rewards programme, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

The first payout under the new programme is scheduled for August 28, while creators moving from Revenue Sharing to the new programme from September 8 will receive their first payment on September 25.

Under the new system, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original content, with payments made every two weeks.

X said qualified impressions will refer to unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline feed where at least 50 per cent of a post is visible. Paid, promoted, artificially generated and fraudulent impressions will not count.

To qualify, creators must be at least 18 years old, live in an eligible country, maintain an account in good standing and operate either a personal or business account.

They must also subscribe to X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, have at least 500 verified followers and record a minimum of 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within the previous 90 days.

X said creators must regularly publish original content to remain eligible.

The platform explained that qualifying original content could include threads, videos, memes, graphics, illustrations, reporting, analysis, commentary and reactions that add meaningful value to existing conversations.

Creators can also build on content produced by others, but X said they must add meaningful commentary, context, analysis, humour or creative transformation.

“Building on existing conversations is a core part of X, but simply reposting someone else’s content is not enough,” the company said.

The platform warned that minor changes such as cropping, filters, borders, watermarks, speed adjustments or simple text overlays would generally not be considered meaningful transformation.

Copied or substantially reproduced content, material downloaded and reposted from X or another platform without the creator being the original author, automated content, disinformation and misleading content will also be excluded.

X said creators who violate the programme’s requirements could be temporarily or permanently removed, depending on the severity of the violation.

The company added that creators would be responsible for obtaining the necessary rights, permissions or licences to use content created by others.

“Original content is content you personally create that reflects your own voice, perspective, expertise, or creativity,” X said.

According to the platform, the new programme is aimed at rewarding creators who make meaningful contributions to conversations on X.

“The Original Content Rewards Program is designed to reward the creators who start them, shape them, and move them forward,” it added.
