FIFA demands explanation from Nigeria over alleged government interference in NFF

FIFA has written to the Nigerian football authorities seeking clarification over reports of alleged government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The letter, dated September 1, 2026, was signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström.

In the correspondence, the world football governing body said it was aware of reports that NFF President Ibrahim Gusau had resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.

FIFA noted that if the reports were confirmed, the development could raise concerns under its statutes, which require member associations to operate independently without undue government interference.

The football body consequently requested clarification from the Nigerian authorities on the circumstances surrounding the reported resignation and the alleged involvement of the government in the matter.
